Breaking barriers to connect the younger generation with mathematics
Breaking barriers to connect the younger generation with mathematics
Maths Volunteers is a volunteer-led academic initiative dedicated to enhancing students' mathematical and professional development. We support learners aiming for higher studies, research, and international scholarships through structured guidance and ethical mentorship.
We believe talent should not be hindered by a lack of direction. Many capable students struggle due to insufficient guidance in academic writing, scholarship preparation, research exposure, and professional standards. Maths Volunteers addresses this gap responsibly and systematically.
Our vision is to build a supportive academic community that empowers mathematics students to reach their full potential and compete confidently at the international level.
Our mission is to provide academic training, scholarship guidance, research guidance and mentorship that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and integrity for higher education and research in mathematics.
Maths Volunteers provides structured academic support designed to strengthen both mathematical understanding and professional preparation.
A key part of our work is delivering short introductory courses in important and emerging mathematical areas, often missing from university curricula in some developing countries. These courses provide foundational exposure and build students’ confidence to explore further. Afterwards, students can deepen their understanding through guided short projects.
We also offer academic training sessions on mathematical writing, theorem formulation, proof presentation, and clear research communication. These sessions develop clarity of thought and precision of expression, essential for advanced study and research.
We host monthly talks by researchers and invited speakers to introduce students to active areas of contemporary mathematics. Speakers provide accessible overviews, highlight current research, open problems, and future opportunities. This helps students link foundational knowledge with ongoing developments.
We also guide students through scholarship and graduate study applications, including preparing academic CVs, writing statements of purpose, understanding recommendation letters, and professional communication with potential supervisors.
Throughout our activities, we emphasise academic integrity and responsible mentorship. We believe lasting success in mathematics requires both technical skill and ethical awareness.
